Reuven Rubin blossoms in our Fine Art Auction
A still life by Romanian-born Israeli painter Reuven Rubin (1893-1974) recently hammered down for £37,000 at our Fine Art auction in July, against a guide of £10,000 to £15,000.
The painting titled 'Daffodils and Iris’ had excellent local provenance and could be traced back to the artist’s exhibition, Paintings of Palestine, at Arthur Tooth & Sons in 1938.
The lot attracted international interest, reflecting Rubin’s reputation as one of the most renowned and famous Israeli artists worldwide. His works appear in collections of leading museums such as the Musee d’Art Moderne and Jewish Museum.
Often celebrated as a pioneer in the Israeli art world, Rubin’s paintings can be compared with the work of French-Russian artist Marc Chagall, with a similar use of radiant colour and simple techniques.
In the same auction, a Victorian Renaissance Revival emerald and diamond necklace was offered for sale with matching earrings refashioned as brooches. Studded with old mine and rose cut diamonds and set with pearls and enamel work, the demi-parure came for sale in its original fitted case, and sold for £23,000 after a furious bidding battle between Spain and the United Kingdom.
